Why Choose A Punching Dummy

There are many techniques for training for many different reasons and using a punching dummy is often a part of the training rituals. Martial artists have used punching and kicking dummies made of leather stuffed with feathers or rags for centuries. Military training has included the use of dummies for punching, kicking, bayonet training and other hand to hand contact techniques. Boxers of course use punching dummies to aid them in gaining their strength and timing before actually sparring with a live person.

punching dummy

Punching dummies are even quite popular as child’s toys. They are usually bottom weighted balloon type toys made of vinyl or other plastic that are designed to bounce back up when hit by the child. This type toy is not to necessarily promote fighting but rather to be used as exercise and a way to release frustration without fighting a neighbor child or sibling. Generally they are in the image of some cartoon or comic book character bad guy so the child can be the good guy and promote learning to be on the side of right instead of wrong.

Punching dummies can be as simple as a punching bag hanging from a ceiling to an elaborate almost lifelike recreation that looks nearly human. Materials can range from canvas bags or dummy bodies filled with rags, other cloth or feathers, to leather or vinyl coverings with newer models sometimes made of Poly-Vinyl-Chloride (PVC). Whatever the material or the technique being taught, these dummies are used as a bridge between individual training and moving up to sparring.

They can be in many locations such as the home recreation room or home gym, a personal or corporate training gym, or a public training facility that is used by many individuals that wish to increase their strength, balance, and endurance against a densely packed, human-like opponent.

Once a person has mastered using a punching dummy to build strength and resolve, they often will engage in friendly sparring to practice their blocks and evasive maneuvers from another person. Law enforcement officers are required to learn self-defense techniques in this manner. Once the level of friendly sparring has been mastered a gloves off or full sparring level can be added to the training. Many people have used sparring as a way to keep fit and keep their senses sharp even though they never intended to enter a boxing or professional fighting arena.

Using a punching dummy is a way to increase skills privately or publically depending on the desired outcome for each individual.

Types Of Boxing Trunks

People often wonder why there are different types of boxing trunks. Boxing trunks have been a trademark in boxing for a number of years now, and their length and color will vary depending on the person wearing them.

boxing trunks

One thing to consider about boxing trunks is the material. Often boxing trunks are made from materials such as silk or satin. The reason for this is not only for the shiny beauty that these materials are known for, but also for the personality and individual style of the wearer.

Boxing shorts are a sort of trademark. You can tell which boxer is in the rink by the color and stripe on his shorts. It is a way of identifying yourself during matches and a symbol of you as a boxer. Like a personal trademark.

Boxing shorts are also functional. The softer materials allow room for air circulation and they keep the boxer cooler. These materials are also less constricting which allows the boxer to move more freely in the ring.

The length of the shorts is something to take into consideration. There are actual length guidelines in the sport of boxing and it is important to know what those guidelines are before wearing your shorts into the ring. Keeping different lengths of boxing trunks is a good idea.

It is most likely the tournament requires a boxer to wear shorts above the knees. This is why you see most boxers as having shorter shorts as opposed to the longer knee length version. However, during winter months or training, boxers will wear a longer pair of shorts for a little added warmth.

You can purchase boxing shorts in many sporting goods stores or online. They can even be custom made to fit your personal color preference. However, you may also opt to make your own boxing shorts with the material you prefer.

Boxing has been around for many years and the satin type of boxing shorts became popular during the 1930’s when boxing was at the height of its popularity. Shirts are not worn during boxing, however, because there is a risk that an opponent can grab a persons shirt, throw them off balance, and then gain control. Being shirtless gives a more equal advantage in the ring.

If you are considering purchasing or making your won shorts, be aware of the colors and lengths of different types of boxing shorts and make your choice with these options in mind.

Using A Punching Dummy

There are many reasons for using a punching dummy in boxing training. Punching dummies serve to help you gain the knowledge of the correct places to punch your opponent and help you with combination training when learning to box.

punching dummy

If you are thinking of purchasing a boxing dummy, there are a couple of things to consider. You will need to ask yourself what kind of punching dummy to get and how often you should train with your punching dummy.

Punching dummies come in different sizes. They are meant to be the torso of an adult male opponent and therefore, any training dummy you purchase should be roughly the same height as yourself. Also, decide if you would rather have a training dummy which is water based or plastic based. A water based punching dummy might leak eventually, however, they are usually regarded as sturdier and can withstand more weight of punches.

Also, do not rely on your punching dummy for all of your training. Punching dummies are excellent for training you in combination punches. You are able to see which part of the body you are hitting and adjust your form accordingly. Also, punching dummies will allow you to build a quicker combination time.

However, it is very important to have other methods of training. Training with a coach or a trainer will assist you in defense training which is something a punching dummy is not able to do. A punching dummy has no sense of self defense, therefore you will always be in the dominant training position. This is not a good thing.

As a boxer, you need a combination of offense and defense to go with your training. You also need to know how to take a punch and how to defend yourself from your opponent. A training dummy does not allow this type of training. Footwork is a very important part of boxing, however, a training dummy will not support the footwork training you will need when you are boxing.

Still, punching dummies can be quite a good training tool when learning to use and master combinations or to quicken your combination speed. Combinations are an essential part of boxing in order to keep your time and your number of punches where they should be. It is also a means of overpowering your partner. Continue using a punching dummy and a combination of other training techniques for the best training techniques.

Boxing Techniques With Footwork

There are many reasons to use boxing techniques with footwork. Boxing requires a lot of skill and a lot of training. It is a combination of speed, rhythm, force, and movement. Boxing is almost like dancing in a way, and footwork training can be the difference between a knock out and getting yourself knocked out.

boxing techniques

There are many ways to practice your boxing techniques with footwork. It is one of the most important things you can do for your boxing career, although it is often overlooked when boxers are being trained. Having fancy footwork can give you the advantage over your opponent.

One of the best ways to prepare for your footwork technique is to keep your legs strong. Many people think that upper body strength is all that is needed for a boxer. They assume that being able to hit hard enough is good enough to win the fight. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Being able to hit hard and quick is indeed a very important skill, but footwork provides you with balance and force behind your punch.

Train your calves and legs as much as you train your upper body. Keep your legs strong by running, cycling, and jump roping while you are training. This makes it easier to stand on the balls of your feet for long periods of time. You will need to stand on the balls of your feet in order to have quicker foot reaction time. You will need the balls of your feet for shifting left and right or spinning out of the way.

Take ballet lessons. Ballet is a dance that teaches grace and movement. Both of those things are very important in boxing. Keeping light on your toes is a requirement, especially if you have a quick opponent.

Also, learn to keep your weight balanced. Naturally, many people tend to favor one leg over another and that causes a shift in balance and weight. By practicing keeping your weight balanced you are able to use both legs equally. This will give you the advantage when you do not know which side your opponent will attack from and you have to be able to shift your body quickly.

Boxing may look like a violent sport on the surface, however, it requires a great amount of skill and gracefulness. By learning boxing techniques with footwork and balancing that with your arm work, you will have a greater advantage than simply using your ability to throw a punch.

Cleaning Workout Gloves

Many people want to know about cleaning workout gloves after boxing. workout gloves, as well as any other type of boxing gloves, can become quite odorous if not cleaned properly. On the inside you get the smell of sweat and stench from hours of hard work and exercise, while on the outside you get your opponents sweat and blood. This can be a breeding ground for bacteria and smells to grow.

workout gloves

There are a few do’s and don’ts when cleaning your boxing gloves. One very important thing to remember is not to wash your boxing workout gloves in the washing machine. Not only can this tear the outside leather covering, but this can also rip the inner cotton and get it all jumbled out of place. Also, by throwing your gloves in the washer, it is highly difficult to get them dry in the dryer afterwards.

The best thing to do is wash the outside of your gloves with a lightly damp wet soapy rag to clean off any sweat and blood, and then allow your gloves to air dry. Once they are air dry, spray the outside with a disinfectant spray in order to neutralize any germs and bacteria.

The inside of your gloves should be treated differently. You cannot get the inside of your gloves wet. This is because they are difficult to dry and can ruin your gloves. Besides, wet cotton mixed with dirty smell usually equals disaster. To clean the inside of your glove, open the wrist opening wide and spray inside with the disinfectant spray. This will neutralize any odors and kill bacteria.

Another way of neutralizing the smell, if you have a particularly odorous pair of gloves, is to put a clean sock full of baking powder into your clove and let it set for a day or two. The baking soda absorb the odors so your gloves smell clean and fresh again. If you prefer, you can fill the sock with chips of wood, such as the kind you find in pet stores for small pet cages. Wood chips, or cedar chips, will also keep the odors at bay and give your gloves a fresh clean scent.

Remember, you cannot machine wash or dry clean your boxing workout gloves. Keep cleaning your workout gloves using disinfectant spray and then hang them upside son from a hood and allow them to air out properly.

Make Your Own Boxing Trunks

There is an easy way to make your own boxing trunks. If you are a new boxer, or simply want your won style, you can make your own boxing shorts to have for yourself. Although there are many places that sell boxing shorts, and some even custom make them for you, making your won boxing shorts can be a rewarding experience.

boxing trunks

The very first step in making your own boxing shorts is to decide what colors you want your shorts to be. Traditionally, boxing shorts are a solid color with a stripe down the side and along the bottom hem. Choose the color of the sorts themselves and then the color of the stripes you want.

Once you have your chosen colors, select the fabric. Usually a polyester and silk combination is used in boxing shorts. This is for air, comfort, and move ability. Choose your fabric carefully and then purchase enough to ensure you have a front and back side to your shorts.

Now, measure your body for the correct pattern. Decide how long you want your shorts. If you want them to your knees, then measure yourself from your waist to your knees. If you would like them a little shorter, use the measuring tape to measure at the exact place you want your shorts to come to. Once you know your desired length, add four inches onto that. Two for the top elastic and two for the hem.

You will want to measure your waist as well to get the correct size of the elastic band. Although drawstring shorts are possible, they are not used in boxing because there id a lot of movement in boxing and strings can easily come undone. Also, with drawstrings there is no give to them and they can remain too tight around your waist during certain techniques or movements. Simply fit the elastic band around your waist a little snugly but yet comfortably. Then cut the measurement with an additional two inches for sewing purposes.

It is now time to make the pattern. Using a large and heavy piece of poster board or cardboard, draw the shape of a pair of shorts using the correct waist and height measurements you took for yourself. Remember to give a few inches for sewing.

Once you have this drawing pattern, cut the pattern out and then use it to cut two pieces of the material for your shorts. Then, simply sew your shorts together around the edges with the front of the material on the inside. Do not close the leg holes or waist. Once this is finished, sew a hole opening around the waist of your shorts for the elastic. Slide th elastic bad through the opening, sew the elastic, and then close it shut. As a final step, sew the color for the stripe and hem along the sides of your shorts and around the legs if you desire them there. This is how to make your own boxing trunks.

punching dummy

The most popular use for punching dummies is for combination training. Combination training teaches you a series of punches in a specific order so that you can deliver a number of hits in a swift manner to your opponent. Using a punching dummy for training purposes will help you see where you are punching your opponent and assist you in trying out different combinations of styles.

Developing a combination technique is extremely important. Combination training helps provide you with the balance, speed, and skill needed to win a boxing match. When you do combination training with a punching dummy, you are able to adapt your combination punches to best suit your own particular style.

As well as combination punches with dummy training, you also need to focus on other aspects of your training. Dummy training does not assist with footwork. Keeping up with your footwork training is important for swift movement and balance. Training with ballet dance classes for balance and grace and building your leg muscles through running and jump roping are all excellent ways of footwork training.

Also, keep up with your defense training while working with punching dummy training. Punching dummies do not give you the opportunity to work on defense training. You must use a sparring partner in order to be able to work on taking a punch and blocking a punch.

With punching dummy training, you may need to decide which type of dummy is best for you. There are dummies without heads and arms, or with arms. Some are weighted down by water and some are weighted down by sand. Decide which type of dummy best suits your needs. However, it is recommended to get a punching dummy with a head. Boxing requires all sorts of upper torso punches, therefore, a headless dummy limits your options.

There are many different styles and techniques for boxing training. Some require a partner and some can be done on your own. However, it is important with punching dummy training for beginners that you get assistance from a trained professional before beginning any training methods.

Learning Boxing Techniques

There are numerous methods involved in learning boxing techniques. Boxing is a very competitive sport which involves an intense amount of skill and concentration. If you are new to boxing, learning the correct skills can mean the difference between success and failure.

boxing techniques

There are a number of things boxers need. Some of those things include speed, force, footwork, and mental concentration. It is important in boxing not to allow yourself to get distracted while in the ring. You must focus on your opponent and their next moves in order to be prepared to advance or retreat.

Arm work is also needed. You do not just stand in the ring and blindly throw punches. There are numerous types of punches to throw and you need to know the different types of punches and the best times to throw them. Keeping one step ahead of the opponent is always best, however, knowing how to get to your opponent is also a must.

Learn how to take a punch. It may seem like an elementary idea, however, learning to take a punch is just as important as learning to avoid a punch. Boxing means you will get hit. If you get hit you must bounce back quickly so you can stay in the game. Taking a punch is an important part of boxing.

Also, footwork is very important. Many people tend to overlook footwork, however, footwork can mean the difference between being in the offense and being in the defense. Boxers will often take dance lessons, such as ballet, in order to get fancy footwork. The reason behind this is that balance is a key factor in boxing. Without balance you are very likely to get knocked down and to stay knocked down.

Aside from footwork, training is very important in learning boxing techniques. Make sure you are learning your boxing techniques from a trained professional. It is important to train your upper and lower body equally so that you have the balance and skill to throw a punch. You also need to train to take a punch and to get through your opponents defense. If your opponent is cornered, getting through his defense will help you maintain your offense which gives you a definite advantage over your opponent.

There are many reasons for training as hard as you can. Winning is, of course, an excellent reason, however, it is not the only reason. When learning boxing techniques, learn all of the techniques you can in order to become a better trained athlete and a more knowledgeable boxer.

Choosing Workout Gloves

When choosing workout gloves for boxing, it is very important to keep a few things into consideration. There are a couple of different sized gloves which serve different functions. Some gloves are better for heavy bag punches, while others are better for sparring and burning fat.

workout gloves

If you are choosing a glove for sparring, choose a glove which is a little bit lighter than what you need it to be. A lighter boxing glove has a higher bounce back quality to it allowing the punches to be faster without a lag in the drawback. Also boxing gloves for sparring that are too heavy will only work out your arm muscles. They will not necessarily deliver the force behind the punch you need in order to deliver the punch needed to win the match.

That being said, if you wish to do your training on a heavy punching bag or a punching dummy, select a pair of workout gloves which are right for the job. Usually , a heavier pair of gloves is best. This allows your arms to workout the muscle and delivers a harder hit to the back for your strength training. The weight of your glove helps determine your overall performance.

There are many different workout gloves to choose from. Workout gloves come in all kinds of sizes, weights, and colors. You can usually purchase a pair of workout gloves in a sporting goods shop or from a number of online sellers. It is recommended, however, that you purchase your boxing gloves in person to determine the proper fit and weight for your size and your training purposes.

Keep in mind that the lighter the glove, the better is for sparring and the heavier the glove the better it is for heavy bag and punching dummy practice. A light workout glove allows for quicker punches and a metabolic workout. It burns fat as opposed to builds muscles. A heavy glove is used to strengthen your muscles, however, they deliver a slower punch, which would give your sparring opponent the advantage.

If you are not used to purchasing boxing workout gloves on your own, ask a local sporting goods store to assist you or ask your training coach or sparring partner to help. A wrong fit, wrong size, or wrong weight can be damaging to your arms and hands and may not be the protection you need when you are throwing a punch. Have a professional with you when choosing workout gloves.

Boxing Trunks As Personal Trademarks

There are many aspects to boxing and some of the most flamboyant items related to fighters are the range in type and colors of their boxing trunks. Just as the sport of boxing has changed and evolved for hundreds of years, boxing apparel has also evolved.

boxing trunks

In the days before boxing had rules, most were simply bare knuckle fights that went on until one person was standing and the other was incapacitated. In such violent fights, apparel was generally whatever the person had on at the time, perhaps minus a shirt. Without real rules or time limits death often occurred either during the fight or from injuries and internal bleeding after the fight.

There were still levels of bare knuckle fighting that took place that eventually evolved into the idea of boxing with a set number of rounds for a set period of time with short breaks between the rounds to evaluate the injuries to the fighter or for the fighter to receive instructions from their coach or other person in their corner so to speak. Once it was determined that more money could be made if a fighter were to actually live long enough to build a reputation, considerations were made to make the fight a bit safer for the fighters.

The use of tape on the hands and gloves evolved so that fighters could have a longer career with less breakage to the bones and damage to the muscles of their hands. The material for the gloves and their weight has changed over time, but ideally were supposed to be the same for both fighters to help even the playing field. It also aided in keeping the fighters from grabbing each other by keeping their hands in a punching position.

Shirts were often not worn during a fight because of the heat and sweat during the fight as well as giving the opponent something to grab onto. As the fighting became more organized, loose fitting pants or shorts were adapted to aid in the movement of the fighter. Boxing trunks often were made of silk, satin, or other shiny eye catching material in bright colors to help the fighters stand out and distinguish themselves from each other. Trademark colors or styles were often worn by particular fighters or members of particular fight clubs or training facilities. Today boxing trunks can still be made of silk or satin, but can also be made of nylon, polyester or other synthetic materials to be eye catching, cool, and aid the movement of the fighter toward victory.
